The Istituto Comprensivo 1 Taormina is located in Taormina. Taormina is settled on a hill, it dominates two grands, sweeping bays below and on the southern side, the top of Mount Etna, the European highest active Vulcano. Taormina is a touristic resort since past times, when ancient people like Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans and Spaniards chose it thanks to its favourable position, mild climate and magic atmosphere. Our school is composed of a nursery school (317 pupils), primary ( 696 pupils)and secondary school (508 pupils); 240 teachers. Our school has 58 classrooms and moreover: art laboratory, linguistic laboratory, scientific laboratory, informatic laboratory, library for students and teachers, a school canteen, a gym, projection room, classroom with interactive multimedia blackboard, football ground, wider external area, green area.
Due the location of our school the students come from different social classes and cultural backgrounds. Moreover, there are a lot of immigrant students coming from countries such Tunisia, Polonia, Romania, Albania, Ukraine. In addition, there are students with educational special needs such as autism, emotional and behaviour difficulties: developmental delay, dyslexia and ADHD ( Attention Deficit, Hyperactivity Disorder). For the students with special needs the school provides special education from specialized teaching staff.
By working in such project, our students are strongly motivated not only in learning foreign lancguages, but also in exchanges the results of their daily school work with their friends all around Europe. These activities help to make their work purposeful and promote the common aspects of European citizenship. Our teachers use interactive whiteboards, computers in the classroom, Our teachers use interactive whiteboards, tablet, computers, ipads in class.
